Here’s the truth about company wellness programs – most of them don’t have great participation. Even in big companies with huge HR divisions and an entire team dedicated to wellness, most programs average less than 50% participation. Why? Don’t even get us started on the socio-economic, geographic and race factors that come in to play. Even with those factors in mind, most of us can agree that companies taking an interest in their employee’s holistic well-being is win-win for the company and the employee, right? And most of us have heard and learned more about mental and physical health in and outside of the workplace post-covid, when it became a more prevalent and relatable topic for people world-wide. So why is participation still a problem?
The reason, in our humble opinion, is because applying wellness to any diverse group of people, is frankly like herding cats. Put another way, have you ever been on the meal planning committee for an event at work? If so, you know how hard it is to satisfy 40 people with one meal solution, let alone 400 or 4,000 people.
To keep it a bit more relatable, let’s talk small businesses. Making some big blanket statements, a lot of small businesses operate like a family, and, we’d argue that a lot of small business owners care about the well-being of their employees. So why, in a small business of 40 employees, would less than 20 of the employees take advantage of a company wellness program? When asked the question directly, the employees’ most common response was “I’m too busy”.
Here we’ve come to the crux of the wellness dilemma. The reality of our fast-paced work environments (and lives) is this: unless employees AND companies see value in wellness, participation will continue to be low; and unless employees AND companies are provided with an effective wellness plan that can be done with less time and effort, participation will continue to be low; and unless employees AND companies can choose their own wellness path, participation will continue to be low.
